INTERVIEW
Launching scalable energy flexibility products: the case for keeping it simple
Chris Bernkopf, Co-Founder & CEO, Podero
“Energy flexibility products are technically complex. Trading systems, market integrations, hardware connections. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes. The question for utilities is how much of that complexity the end customer needs to understand.
Chris Bernkopf, Co-founder & CEO of Podero, argues the answer is none of it. His view is that the most effective flexibility propositions are the ones that are easiest to explain, ideally in seven words or less. “”Rent out your battery, earn 10 euros.”” No conditions, no caveats, no technical detail. The edge cases exist, but they should be handled out of sight.
Podero is built around that principle. They integrate directly with energy markets, trading systems, virtual power plants, and hardware manufacturers, and offer both a white label consumer app and full API access. The utility sends price information, Podero executes the trades, and the utility passes the earnings to the customer. The financial risk sits with Podero.
Watch the video to hear Chris explain why simplicity is the deciding factor in getting flexibility products to market, and what utilities need to put in place to make it work.”
