Utilities are under pressure on multiple fronts at once. Decarbonise, reduce costs, digitise – and do all of it while operating some of the most critical and regulated infrastructure in the world. For many, that regulatory environment feels like a brake on innovation. Frederik Op de Beeck, Business Manager Utilities at Microsoft, argues it doesn’t have to be.

Microsoft’s position is that compliance and innovation are not in conflict. The security, GDPR, data residency and sovereignty requirements that utilities operate under are handled at platform level, built into the Microsoft cloud by default. That means utilities can adopt AI without having to solve compliance separately every time they move forward.

The partner model is central to how this works in practice. Microsoft provides the platform foundation. Partners like Itineris bring the industry-specific knowledge on top. The Youmek suite, built entirely on Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Azure, requires no custom integration, no data silos, and no bespoke development. The compliance and security principles are inherited from the platform. Utilities get something they can start with immediately.

And this is moving beyond pilots. Real implementations are happening now: AI chatbots improving customer experience and reducing call centre load, AI-driven maintenance scheduling, grid load optimisation. The use cases are live and the results are measurable.
