The case for the energy transition has shifted from climate to economics and security. The dominant message from Ignition Partners’ conversations at Future of Utilities: Energy Transition Summit. Alberto Ogura of Climate KIC put it bluntly – the real driver behind decarbonisation is “economy, economy, economy.” Simon Barnham from the UK’s Department of Business, Trade and Industry pointed to hard evidence: economies that invested earlier in renewables weathered the oil price shocks from the Middle East escalation considerably better than those that didn’t. The question now is whether that reframing is enough to unlock the capital and political commitment that the transition has always struggled to attract – and whether the industry can agree on what to fix first. Avrille Palha of the European Investment Bank, Tim Van Amstel of E.ON One, Sara Brooks of Kaluza and others had some very different views on that last point.
